Indian Railways has officially received approval for a massive infrastructure upgrade that will significantly transform train travel across three states. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has cleared the construction of a 367-kilometer fourth railway line connecting Kharagpur and Jharsuguda via Tatanagar and Adityapur under the South Eastern Railway zone. This crucial project aims to ease congestion on the vital Howrah-Mumbai route, benefiting daily commuters, long-distance travellers, and freight operations alike. Here are the key highlights of this major railway expansion project: The project is estimated to cost 6,528 crore rupees and is scheduled for completion by the 2029-30 fiscal year. The new alignment will traverse 14 districts across West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha, officially designated as a 'Special Railway Project' on January 29, 2026.
The Howrah-Mumbai route is one of the busiest corridors in the country, often facing heavy traffic congestion that affects punctuality. To solve this, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader government strategy to
convert seven high-density corridors into four-track routes. The addition of the fourth line will dramatically enhance track capacity, allowing both passenger and freight trains to move at improved operational speeds with fewer delays.
Beyond passenger convenience, this ambitious rail expansion brings massive developmental benefits to the region. The project is expected to provide
improved rail connectivity to approximately 56 lakh people residing in 4,790 villages across the three states. In terms of economic and ecological impact, the development will
generate 125 lakh man-days of employment during its construction phase. Furthermore, it is projected to achieve
annual logistics cost savings of 967.91 crore rupees and
reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 43.31 crore kilograms annually by shifting more freight and passenger traffic to efficient rail transport.
