₹8,741 Cr Kharsia-Parmalkasa Rail Corridor for Chhattisgarh

Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has officially announced a massive infrastructure project that promises to transform the transport landscape of Chhattisgarh. The development of the new Kharsia-Parmalkasa Double Line Corridor, passing through Naya Raipur, is set to become a cornerstone of the state's railway network.

Valued at a staggering ₹8,741 crore, this project has been designated as a 'Special Railway Project' to ensure its construction is expedited. The ministry has set a target completion date of March 2031.

The scope of the Kharsia-Parmalkasa Double Line Corridor is immense. To facilitate seamless movement, the project will involve laying 615 km of tracks over a 278 km route. The engineering requirements for this corridor include:

  • 21 new railway stations to serve local and transit passengers.
  • 48 major bridges and 349 minor bridges to navigate the terrain.
  • 14 flyovers and 5 rail flyovers.
  • 184 underpasses to ensure minimal disruption to local movement.

Spanning across eight districts, the route is strategically designed to bypass the heavily congested railway nodes in Bilaspur, Raipur, and Durg, allowing for much faster freight and passenger transit.

Boosting Economy and Connectivity

Aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the corridor is expected to be a major driver of economic growth. The project is projected to generate 2 crore mandays of employment and will directly benefit approximately 47.2 lakh residents in the region.

The financial and environmental benefits are also significant:

  • Logistics Savings: An estimated annual saving of ₹2,520 crore in logistics costs.
  • Fuel Efficiency: A reduction in diesel consumption by approximately 22 crore liters, valued at roughly ₹2,500 crore.

Connecting Chhattisgarh to Maharashtra

Beyond local improvements, this corridor serves a vital strategic purpose. It will link the eastern, central, and western parts of Chhattisgarh, providing the state with its first direct railway connection to Maharashtra. As land acquisition for the required 1,852 hectares proceeds, this project follows a significant increase in the railway budget allocation for Chhattisgarh, which reached ₹7,470 crore for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
