Indian Railways is steadily transforming passenger infrastructure across the Seemanchal region as the redevelopment of Kishanganj and Thakurganj railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme reaches advanced stages. Passengers travelling through these stations will soon benefit from world-class amenities and improved regional connectivity. Here are the key highlights of the ongoing railway modernization projects in the region: about 70% of the station redevelopment work has been completed since construction began 18 months ago, with the project expected to finish by early 2027. The modernization of Kishanganj station has an estimated cost of 42 crore rupees, while Thakurganj station has a budget allocation of 27.80 crore rupees. Additionally, Thakurganj is slated to become a major rail hub to boost connectivity on the busy Delhi-Guwahati corridor.
The ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is reshaping travel experiences in Bihar. According to recent updates, the ongoing work at Kishanganj and Thakurganj is moving forward to meet the early 2027 deadline. Alongside station revamps, strategic track expansion projects are underway.
Land acquisition notifications for the 19.95-kilometer double-tracking project between Aluabari Road and Thakurganj were issued in August 2026. Furthermore,
formal approval has been granted for the 56.41-kilometer Thakurganj-Siliguri rail line doubling, and a survey is progressing for a
new 24.90-kilometer broad gauge line between Thakurganj and Chatarhat. Long-term plans discussed in January 2026 also include building a new Kishanganj station structure with an integrated rail shed and connecting Thakurganj to Araria.
While development is moving at a rapid pace, the projects have encountered minor operational hurdles and local concerns.
Local residents protested on August 25 and 27, 2026, over the proposed station entrance at Thakurganj to protect an old tree, which temporarily halted construction until local officials intervened. Earlier in the year on
June 7, 2026, administrative concerns arose when 12 fans went missing from the newly built 9.16-crore rupee foot-over-bridge equipped with lifts and escalators. To facilitate these heavy infrastructure works, the Katihar Railway Division announced on
May 22, 2026, that several premium trains including Rajdhani and Amrit Bharat Express services were rerouted via the Thakurganj-Pawakhal route with special temporary halts at Thakurganj. These temporary measures are crucial for ensuring the timely completion of ambitious corridor upgrades that will ultimately benefit millions of passengers.
