Ladakh to Host World’s Highest Railway Station at 17,582 Feet
India plans the Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway project, featuring a world-record station in Tengla, Ladakh at 17,582 feet.

India is preparing to achieve a monumental milestone in railway engineering. Plans are currently being finalized for the ambitious Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway project, which is set to feature the world's highest railway station located in Tengla, Ladakh.
At an incredible altitude of approximately 17,582 feet (5,359 meters), this proposed station will shatter existing records. Once operational, it will surpass China’s Tanggula railway station, which currently holds the title of the world's highest at 5,068 meters.
An Engineering Marvel Through the Himalayas
The project is a massive undertaking, spanning a total length of 489 kilometers. This broad-gauge line is designed to connect Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh directly to Leh in Ladakh, providing a vital link to the remote high-altitude regions.
Given the extreme and unforgiving Himalayan terrain, the construction will require unprecedented technical expertise. To navigate the mountains, approximately 270 kilometers of tunnels will be built, meaning more than 50% of the entire track will run underground. The estimated cost for this gargantuan project is approximately ₹1.31 lakh crore.
Strategic Importance and Military Logistics
The Ministry of Railways has already completed the necessary surveys and the Detailed Project Report (DPR). However, the project is more than just a transport link; it is a matter of national security.
The Ministry of Defence has designated this route as a strategic corridor. The railway is intended to significantly enhance year-round military logistics and ensure seamless troop connectivity in the sensitive border regions of Ladakh, where weather often disrupts traditional transport.
Challenges and the Path Ahead
Despite the progress in planning, the project faces several significant hurdles before construction can begin:
- Regulatory Approvals: The project is currently awaiting formal construction approval following further consultations with NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Finance.
- Land Acquisition: Complex land acquisition processes remain a major bottleneck. Notably, an October 2026 Himachal Pradesh High Court decision quashed a preliminary land acquisition notification due to statutory non-compliance.
Once the challenges are overcome and the line is completed, it is expected to be a game-changer for the region. The railway will provide essential all-weather connectivity, stabilizing the supply of goods and providing a massive boost to tourism and economic activities in the Lahaul-Spiti, Zanskar, and Leh areas.
