Railway safety boost: First full-scale crash test of LHB coaches successfully conducted
Indian Railways reached a major milestone in passenger safety on June 24, 2026. For the first time, a full-scale crash test of LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches was successfully carried out. The test was a joint effort between the Research, Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Pune. Two types of coaches, an LSLRD (Luggage, Guard and Divyangjan) and an LWSPP (Passenger) coach, were used. These coaches were released from a special ramp and crashed into a stationary ballast wagon at a speed of about 43-44 km/h. The process followed the international crashworthy standard EN 15227.
