Railway safety boost: First full-scale crash test of LHB coaches successfully conducted

Indian Railways reached a major milestone in passenger safety on June 24, 2026. For the first time, a full-scale crash test of LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches was successfully carried out. This test happened at the dedicated crash test facility of RDSO in Lucknow to check how coaches behave during high-speed collisions.

How was the LHB coach crash test conducted?

The test was a joint effort between the Research, Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Pune. Two types of coaches, an LSLRD (Luggage, Guard and Divyangjan) and an LWSPP (Passenger) coach, were used. These coaches were released from a special ramp and crashed into a stationary ballast wagon at a speed of about 43-44 km/h. The process followed the international crashworthy standard EN 15227.

What are the benefits of LHB coaches for passengers?

LHB coaches are designed to be much safer than the old ICF coaches. They feature an anti-climbing design which prevents coaches from piling up on top of each other during an accident. These coaches are made with fire-resistant materials and have better structural strength. They also include disc brakes and emergency exit windows to help passengers in critical situations.

What data will this test provide for future trains?

Feature Purpose of Testing
Deformation Pattern To see how the coach body bends during impact
Acceleration Levels To measure the force felt inside the coach
Energy Absorption To check if safety features absorb the crash energy
Survival Space To ensure passengers have enough safe space during a hit

RDSO officials stated that the data from high-speed cameras and sensors will help in designing even stronger coaches. This real-world data will be used to improve the safety shield of future trains and make rail travel safer for everyone.
