Lucknow passengers traveling through Charbagh Railway Station will soon experience smoother commutes as authorities roll out a comprehensive new traffic plan next month. The upcoming changes are designed to eliminate chronic traffic jams around the station premises and streamline vehicular movement for daily commuters and visitors. The project is part of the massive ₹420 crore Amrit Bharat Station Scheme redevelopment.
Traffic Realignment and Entry Changes
The traffic overhaul introduces significant structural changes to the entry and exit points at the station.
Vehicles entering through the cabway will be directed toward the Kanpur Road side of the junction. Authorities are also taking specific measures to reduce the heavy congestion pressure that currently builds up near the passenger reservation center. These changes are overseen by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) as a vital component of the station's ongoing modernization.
The traffic reorganization complements the broader transformation of the station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
The ₹420 crore redevelopment project is expected to conclude in 2026. Once completed, the upgraded facility will serve as a world-class transit hub capable of accommodating an impressive
1.4 lakh passengers daily. Current infrastructure work has required multiple traffic and power blocks, including an eight-day period in April 2026 and further disruptions scheduled between
May 15 and June 23, 2026, to construct a new air concourse.
Traffic management around the transport hub has been an evolving priority for city officials.
On April 20, 2026, DCP Traffic Raveena Tyagi oversaw the implementation of a U-turn traffic model to replace direct right turns and keep vehicles moving. To further improve safety and accessibility, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has actively cleared illegal encroachments near the station building. Safety and management have also seen stricter oversight following recent incidents. After a platform shed collapse on
May 29-30, 2026, which injured two passengers and a ticket examiner, authorities suspended a site engineer and penalized the contractor. Furthermore, after private parking contractors failed to meet financial obligations, the Railways took direct control of the parking facilities.
Motorists are now permitted up to ten minutes of free access at the station parking zones.
