Lucknow-Delhi & Mumbai Trains Fully Booked: Festive Rush Triggers 'Regret' Status!
As the festive season approaches, travelers planning to journey from Lucknow to Delhi and Mumbai are facing a massive hurdle. With the upcoming celebrations of Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja, train services are seeing an unprecedented surge in demand, leaving many passengers stranded with "regret" statuses or fully booked berths.
The New Waiting List Crunch
A significant change in railway policy has added to the travelers' woes. In the past, major trains like the Pushpak Express (to Mumbai) or the Lucknow Mail and AC Express (to Delhi) would accommodate waiting lists ranging from 200 to 350 passengers. However, under the current mandate, bookings now hit "regret" status much earlier—once the waiting list exceeds approximately 150 passengers.

The sudden restriction has drawn criticism from passenger representatives. S.S. Uppal, president of the Daily Passenger Association, has highlighted the growing difficulties and hardships faced by commuters due to these new waiting list limitations.
Railway's Massive Festive Counter-Plan
To tackle the overwhelming rush and mitigate the shortage of seats, Northern Railway and the Lucknow division have rolled out several emergency measures:
1. Deployment of Special Trains
Authorities have initiated the operation of over 100 special festival train services. Booking for these services commenced on September 6, 2026, utilizing the 60-day advance reservation window to help passengers plan ahead.
2. Targeted Services to Mumbai (LTT)
The Lucknow division is also running two pairs of reserved festival specials connecting Sultanpur/Varanasi to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). These services are scheduled to run from October 21 to November 12, 2026. These trains are equipped with:
- 20 LHB coaches per train.
- AC three-tier economy options.
- General class seating.
3. Extra Coaches and Technical Upgrades
Beyond special trains, officials are adding extra coaches to existing regular services to increase capacity. On the digital front, IRCTC has upgraded its Next Generation e-Ticketing (NGeT) system. By installing new servers and implementing anti-bot technology, the railway aims to ensure that booking opportunities are available to genuine passengers rather than automated systems.
