Magh Mela 2026: Double-Engine Special Trains for Prayagraj

To manage the massive influx of pilgrims during the upcoming Magh Mela 2026, the North Central Railway (NCR) has announced a major operational overhaul. The railway plans to operate special trains equipped with engines at both ends, a strategic move designed to streamline travel and ensure rapid deployment across various routes.

By utilizing double-engine configurations, the railway aims to eliminate the time typically lost when changing locomotive directions at terminals. This allows for much faster turnaround times, enabling the railway to adjust services in real-time based on crowd density. The Magh Mela 2026 is scheduled to span 45 days, starting on January 3, 2026, with Paush Purnima and concluding on Mahashivratri.

Implementing the 'Mahakumbh Model'

Following a high-level joint meeting between the North Central Railway, Northern Railway (NR), and North Eastern Railway (NER) at the NCR headquarters, officials have decided to implement the successful 'Mahakumbh model' for technical service delivery and crowd management. General Manager Naresh Pal Singh emphasized that this strategy is focused on prioritizing safe and efficient transit for all pilgrims.

To support this massive undertaking, the Railway Board has instructed all zonal railways to deploy their most reliable engines. Furthermore, the railway will ensure that only highly experienced loco pilots are assigned to Prayagraj-bound services. To prevent any potential staff shortages, additional personnel are being sourced from neighboring railway zones.

Enhanced Connectivity and Special Services

Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Ashish Jain has been conducting extensive inspections to finalize plans for special MEMU train operations, including vital services between Varanasi and Prayagraj Rambagh. To accommodate the expected surge in travelers, the North Central Railway is currently procuring special train rakes from various zonal railways, with these arrivals expected to begin in December.

Several key improvements have been made to the rail network to support the event:

  • Temporary Stoppages: Six pairs of trains have been granted temporary stoppages at both Ram Bagh and Jhusi stations to facilitate easier access.
  • Ring Rail Facility: A ring rail facility is being initiated to enhance connectivity between major pilgrimage sites, including Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Chitrakoot.

Digital Support via Rail Seva App

To provide pilgrims with much-needed convenience, the NCR has launched the 'Rail Seva App.' As confirmed by CPRO Shashikant Tripathi, the app will offer real-time access to essential information, including:

  • Train schedules
  • Seat availability
  • Ticket counter information
  • Detailed station information
