Mathura-Aligarh Direct Rail Link: Final Survey Begins!

For nearly eight decades, commuters traveling between Mathura and Aligarh have faced the inconvenience of indirect routes or long road journeys. That is about to change. Indian Railways has officially launched the Final Location Survey for a proposed direct rail line connecting these two prominent cities, marking a massive step toward resolving a 79-year-long connectivity gap.
Ending a 79-Year Connectivity Gap
The proposed project aims to provide a seamless connection between Mathura and Aligarh, which currently lack a direct rail link. The survey is being conducted via Medu Junction on the Mathura-Kasganj section of the North Eastern Railway. This major development follows a high-level meeting held on Friday, October 9, 2026, between North Central Railway General Manager Naresh Pal Singh and Members of Parliament representing the Agra Division.
According to Agra Division PRO Sanjay Gautam, the proposal is currently under active review, and a final decision is expected in the near future.
Political Momentum Drives the Project
The initiative gained significant momentum following a formal request by Mathura Lok Sabha MP Hema Malini. In a letter addressed to the North Central Railway General Manager on September 14, 2026, she emphasized the necessity of this link. The proposal received strong political backing from Aligarh MP Satish Gautam and Hathras MP Anup Pradhan.
Janardhan Sharma, a representative for Hema Malini, confirmed that the project is now moving forward as a direct result of these concerted efforts by local leadership to improve regional infrastructure.
Impact on Travel and Future Vande Bharat Prospects
At present, the approximately 60-kilometer distance between Mathura and Aligarh must be covered via road transport or through indirect railway routes. Railway officials believe the new direct link will:
- Significantly reduce travel time for passengers.
- Alleviate transit difficulties for thousands of daily commuters.
- Improve overall connectivity within the region.
Beyond the new line, there is additional excitement regarding premium train services. The railway administration is currently evaluating a potential extension of the Agra-Varanasi Vande Bharat Express to Mathura. However, this extension is contingent upon the development of necessary maintenance infrastructure at the local station to support the high-speed service.
