Mathura-Aligarh Rail Link: DRM Inspects Hathras Junction

In a significant move toward enhancing regional connectivity, Rajnish Agarwal, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of the Prayagraj Division, conducted a detailed inspection of Hathras Junction on October 15, 2026. The visit focused on evaluating the infrastructure necessary for the proposed Mathura-Aligarh rail link.
Inspecting Infrastructure and Addressing Issues
During the visit, Agarwal meticulously examined the yard at both the eastern and western ends. His inspection covered critical components, including current track connectivity and the existing signaling systems. While reviewing the station's facilities, the DRM noted a flaw in the newly installed tin shed on platform number one. Expressing dissatisfaction over rainwater leakage from the structure, he issued immediate orders for its repair to ensure passenger comfort.
The Proposed Mathura-Aligarh Chord Line
The inspection serves as a vital step in the development of the proposed chord line project. This project aims to create a direct rail connection between Mathura and Aligarh by constructing a new 2-to-4-kilometer line. This link is intended to connect Medu Station, which falls under the North Eastern Railway, directly to Hathras Junction.
Despite the high volume of daily passenger traffic and the relatively short 60-kilometer distance between the two cities, a direct rail route currently does not exist. The project has gained significant momentum through various political and administrative efforts:
- Mathura MP Hema Malini submitted a formal proposal to the General Manager of North Central Railway on September 14.
- Aligarh MP Satish Gautam and Hathras MP Anoop Pradhan have voiced strong support for the project.
- The proposal was a key topic during a high-level meeting on October 9, 2026, between General Manager Naresh Pal Singh and regional MPs regarding railway service improvements.
Boosting Trade and Travel Efficiency
Sanjay Gautam, the Public Relations Officer for the Agra Division, confirmed that a final location survey is currently in progress, with an early decision expected soon. Once completed, the link is anticipated to drastically reduce travel time and provide a massive boost to regional trade, particularly for the metal and machine industries in Aligarh.
Potential Vande Bharat Extension
In a separate development, railway officials are exploring the possibility of extending the Agra-Varanasi Vande Bharat Express to Mathura. This extension would be contingent upon the development of necessary maintenance facilities at Mathura station to support the high-speed service.
