Mawai Railway Crossing in Pratapgarh Closes for 16 Months Starting September 2026

Train passengers and local commuters in Uttar Pradesh need to take note of a major upcoming infrastructure project as the Mawai railway crossing in Pratapgarh will close for 16 months starting September 1, 2026. This prolonged temporary closure is required to facilitate the construction of a new Road Overbridge (ROB) designed to ease traffic bottlenecks in the region. The closure and its associated traffic diversion routes will remain in effect until December 2027. Local authorities have already completed preliminary site assessments, and a comprehensive traffic management plan is now in place to minimize commuter inconvenience while construction work progresses.

Traffic Diversion Plan and Heavy Vehicle Rerouting

To ensure smooth movement of vehicles during the construction phase, local administration has formulated a detailed diversion strategy. Harishchandra, a local Lekhpal in Mawaikala, conducted a thorough site inspection and submitted a formal traffic diversion report along with a proposed map to higher authorities. Under this new traffic management plan, heavy vehicles including buses, trailers, and trucks will be strictly diverted away from the usual routes. Vehicles traveling from Mawaikala toward Kunda town and Babuganj will be rerouted via the canal bank through Dulumai and along the Badgaon canal bank toward the Babuganj railway gate. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid delays.

Boosting Safety and Infrastructure Across Indian Railways

The construction of the new Road Overbridge at the Mawai railway crossing is part of a broader nationwide push by Indian Railways to eliminate busy level crossings and enhance public safety. According to an official PIB release, Indian Railways has constructed more than 13,600 Road Overbridges (ROB) and Road Under Bridges (RUB) between 2014 and 2025. This massive undertaking has effectively tripled the pace of infrastructure construction across the national transporter network, prioritizing passenger safety and reducing road-train conflicts at critical junctions.
