Meerut to Haridwar and Rishikesh Namo Bharat Train Extension: CM Dhami Proposes New Route to PM Modi

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has formally requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend the Namo Bharat train service from Meerut to Haridwar and Rishikesh. During a meeting in Delhi on March 27, 2026, the Chief Minister highlighted how this connectivity would transform travel for pilgrims and locals. The proposal aims to link the existing Delhi-Meerut corridor directly to the gateway of the Himalayas to assist the Chardham Yatra.

What is the current status of the Meerut-Haridwar Namo Bharat project?

The extension to Haridwar and Rishikesh is currently at the proposal stage and has not yet entered the construction phase. CM Dhami met PM Modi to seek central support for this expansion to boost state development and tourism. Earlier in July 2025, Meerut MP Arun Govil had also raised a similar demand to improve connectivity for trade and education. While the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut section is already operational as of February 22, 2026, the extension northwards awaits official approval and technical surveys by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).

Key benefits and travel details of the proposed extension

The proposed expansion is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi-NCR and the holy cities of Uttarakhand. It will provide a major boost to religious tourism, specifically for the Chardham Yatra and Kumbh Mela. Residents of Muzaffarnagar and nearby regions will also find it easier to commute for work and education. Currently, the Namo Bharat system offers both Standard and Premium classes for passengers. Tickets for the existing operational routes can be booked through the Namo Bharat Connect app or using NCR cards.
