Mizoram Bairabi Sairang rail line completes one year of operations

The Bairabi–Sairang rail line in Mizoram celebrated its first anniversary on September 13, 2026, marking a pivotal milestone in the integration of the hill state into the national railway network. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, the 51.38-kilometer infrastructure project has become a vital gateway for mobility and logistics in the region.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the line has facilitated over 1,100 train trips during its first year of operation, with more than 1.5 million passengers utilizing the service. Specifically, Sairang Railway Station has managed the movement of over 500,000 passengers. To enhance connectivity, the network now supports three long-distance services linking Sairang to Guwahati, Kolkata, and Delhi, including the Sairang–Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express, which provides the state's first direct premium link to the National Capital. Additionally, a Sairang–Silchar passenger service was introduced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in January 2026.

Freight and Engineering Marvel

In terms of freight logistics, the line has significantly reduced dependence on road transport, delivering over 2,500 wagons of goods to Sairang. Construction materials—including cement, sand, and stone—account for approximately 70% of this cargo. The arrival of the first freight train on September 14, 2025, marked the start of this trend, carrying over 26,000 bags of cement.

The project, overseen by the Northeast Frontier Railway zone, stands as an engineering feat featuring 153 bridges and 45 tunnels spanning nearly 16 kilometers. Among the infrastructure is a bridge reaching approximately 114 meters in height, surpassing the height of Delhi’s Qutub Minar by 42 meters.
