Mokama Ganga Bridge: ECR Ready to Revolutionize Bihar Rail Connectivity!
Preparations are reaching their final stages as the East Central Railway (ECR) gets ready to launch a new double-line rail bridge crossing the Ganga at Mokama. This massive infrastructure project is designed to drastically improve the link between North and South Bihar, serving as a vital addition to the Delhi-Howrah main line.
A Massive Engineering Feat
Constructed by IRCON, the bridge itself spans approximately 1.86 to 1.9 km. However, when including the approach lines, the total length of the project reaches an impressive 14 km. The scope of this development is extensive, featuring:
- Nine minor bridges to support the network.
- Two Road Over Bridges (ROBs) for improved local transit.
- Three Rail-Over-Rail structures to ensure seamless integration.
The project, which was sanctioned in the 2015-16 Rail Budget and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2016, represents a significant investment with an estimated cost ranging between ₹1,491.47 crore and ₹1,700 crore.
Critical Non-Interlocking Work Underway
To ensure the new bridge works perfectly with existing signaling and operational systems, ECR has initiated essential Non-Interlocking (NI) work. This technical phase began on September 20/21, 2026, and is expected to be completed by October 4, 2026. ECR General Manager Dimpy Garg recently inspected the site, issuing strict instructions to prioritize both safety and construction quality.
Saraswati Chandra, the Chief Public Relations Officer of ECR, noted that this NI work is a mandatory step for the successful alignment of the railway's signaling systems.
Major Train Disruptions Reported
While these works are necessary for long-term progress, they have caused significant temporary changes to train schedules. As of Thursday, September 24, 2026, the following adjustments have been made:
- 23 trains have been cancelled.
- 22 trains have been diverted.
This follows earlier announcements regarding the cancellation of 16 trains and the diversion of 20 others. In total, Indian Railways has had to adjust the movement of approximately 845 trains throughout the month of September due to these critical works. Local coordination is currently being managed by Danapur Division Railway Manager Vinod Kumar.
Faster Travel and Reduced Congestion
The commissioning of this new bridge is set to provide a massive relief to the existing single-line Rajendra Setu, which currently faces heavy congestion. Once the new line is fully operational, commuters can look forward to significantly higher speeds:
- Standard train speeds are expected to range between 110 and 140 km/h.
- Passenger trains may reach speeds of up to 160 km/h.
Regular train operations are expected to resume in October 2026, with a potential formal inauguration ceremony scheduled for October 5 or 6, 2026.
