MP Gopal Jee Thakur reviews railway infrastructure progress in Darbhanga

Member of Parliament Gopal Jee Thakur recently held a high-level meeting with the Railway General Manager to review ongoing railway infrastructure projects in Darbhanga. This crucial review aims to speed up modernization efforts and boost regional connectivity across North Bihar.

  • Modernization of Darbhanga Junction is underway with a sanctioned budget of Rs 340 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
  • Shisho and Kakarghatti stations have been upgraded to A-grade junction status to reduce operational pressure on Darbhanga Junction.
  • A mega coaching complex is planned at Shisho to improve train scheduling and passenger amenities.
  • Bihar currently has 59 sanctioned railway projects spanning 5,067 kilometers with a total investment of ₹96,651 crore as of July 2026.

Transforming Darbhanga into a Transport Hub

The recent high-level discussions focused heavily on expediting key developments to transform Darbhanga into a world-class transport hub. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a massive budget of Rs 340 crore has been allocated specifically for the modernization of Darbhanga Junction. This upgrade will significantly enhance passenger facilities, aesthetics, and overall station capacity to handle rising commuter numbers efficiently.

Boosting Regional Connectivity and Freight Movement

To alleviate heavy operational pressure on Darbhanga Junction and strengthen freight movement across the region, authorities have upgraded Shisho and Kakarghatti stations to A-grade junction status. Furthermore, plans are well underway to establish a mega coaching complex at Shisho. This facility will play a vital role in improving train scheduling, maintenance, and passenger amenities. The meeting also closely evaluated the status of the Darbhanga bypass line project, which strategically connects Shisho Halt and Kakarghati to ensure seamless rail traffic flow.

Broader Railway Growth Across Bihar

These local initiatives perfectly align with the broader state-level infrastructure goals for Indian Railways. As of July 2026, an impressive 59 railway projects—comprising new lines, gauge conversions, and doubling efforts—are officially sanctioned for Bihar. These projects span a massive 5,067 kilometers with a total investment of ₹96,651 crore. Additionally, by March 2026, approximately 1,050 kilometers of new track had already been successfully commissioned at a total expenditure of ₹29,860 crore, reflecting the rapid pace of railway development in the region.
