Indian Railways approves new rail line between Mukutban and Garhchandur in Maharashtra
Indian Railways has officially given the green light to a major infrastructure project that will connect Maharashtra districts with improved rail connectivity. This new railway development aims to boost freight capacity while also introducing convenient passenger train services for local commuters traveling through the region.
The Ministry of Railways has officially approved the construction of a new 38.21-kilometer rail line connecting Mukutban in the Yavatmal district to Garhchandur in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. This vital project received formal approval around September 17-18, 2026, and is estimated to cost ₹493 crore. The entire corridor will be developed under the administrative jurisdiction of the South Central Railway zone.
Boosting Freight and Industrial Growth
According to the Ministry of Railways, the new infrastructure will establish a much more efficient rail corridor, significantly reducing travel distance, transportation time, and operational costs. Designed primarily to serve as a strategic link between key industrial and mining hubs, the rail line will facilitate the smooth transport of essential commodities, including coal, cement, and sponge iron. The project boasts a projected freight capacity of 6.08 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
Decongesting Busy Networks
Beyond freight efficiency, this new route is expected to heavily decongest the existing Wardha-Manikgarh section. It will also provide a reliable alternative route to the heavily utilized Balharshah-Nagpur High-Density Network. Furthermore, the project will seamlessly connect local coal, cement, and limestone clusters directly to the Majri-Nanded route, streamlining transit for goods heading toward major markets in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Passenger Benefits
While the project is a massive win for industrial logistics, it does not forget daily commuters. Keeping passenger convenience in mind, railway authorities have finalized plans to operate two Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) services in each direction daily, ensuring smooth local connectivity for residents living along the newly established route.
