Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Advances With High Speed Electrification Milestone
Electrification works on the 508-kilometer Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor are gathering momentum, marking a critical phase for India’s inaugural bullet train project. The Ministry of Railways and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently shared updates confirming that the infrastructure development is moving forward as planned to meet ambitious operational deadlines. Key developments include:
• The first phase of operations is scheduled to commence on August 15, 2027, covering the Surat-Bilimora and Surat-Vapi sections.
• The entire 508-km corridor is targeted for full completion by 2028.
• Indigenous B28 bullet trainsets with a design speed of 280 kmph will serve the initial sections.
• The project utilizes a sophisticated 2×25 kV Overhead Traction System capable of supporting speeds up to 320 kmph.
Advanced Power Infrastructure
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is currently installing a robust electrical backbone to ensure seamless high-speed operations. This massive undertaking involves the installation of approximately 22,000 steel masts and over 25,700 cantilever assemblies. To maintain a consistent and reliable power supply, the network will be supported by 14 traction substations and 31 switching posts strategically positioned along the route.
Indigenous Manufacturing and Future Outlook
In a report tabled on August 10, 2026, the Parliamentary Standing Committee commended the government’s commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative through the deployment of the indigenous B28 trainsets. The committee has urged the Railway Ministry to further bolster domestic manufacturing of critical bullet train components. Additionally, there is a strong focus on enhancing high-speed rail training programs by leveraging international expertise.
As India prepares to join the global club of high-speed rail nations, the Ministry continues to monitor international best practices to refine the MAHSR project and lay the groundwork for future high-speed corridors across the country.
