Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: High-Tech Movable Crossings to Unlock 320 Kmph Speed

The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has unveiled a major technological upgrade for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor. To facilitate safe and seamless travel at speeds of up to 320 kmph, the project will implement advanced movable crossings, also known as swing-nose crossings. This cutting-edge implementation marks a significant first for the Indian railway network.

Eliminating the Gap: The Science of Swing-Nose Crossings

Traditional fixed crossings typically leave a small gap in the rail, which can become problematic at ultra-high speeds. The new movable crossing technology addresses this by shifting the crossing nose in perfect synchronization with the switch rails. This creates a continuous rail surface, providing several critical benefits:

  • Minimized Vibration: It significantly reduces dynamic impact and noise during transit.
  • Reduced Wear: The design minimizes the physical strain on wheel flanges, rolling stock, and the track infrastructure itself.
  • Enhanced Stability: The continuous surface ensures smoother transitions for the high-speed trains.

Rigorous Safety and Passenger Comfort

To maintain the highest safety standards, these high-speed turnouts are equipped with two independent point machines. One machine controls the switch rails, while the other manages the movable crossing nose. The signaling system ensures that train movement is strictly authorized only after both machines have confirmed position detection and successful locking.

Furthermore, passenger comfort is being prioritized through the use of canted turnouts. These allow the tracks to maintain banking through diverging sections, effectively managing lateral forces to ensure a smooth ride even when the train is changing tracks.

Project Timeline and Shinkansen Technology

The MAHSR corridor is built upon Japanese Shinkansen technology, ensuring world-class performance. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has indicated that the Ministry is targeting the start of operations on the corridor's priority section by mid-2027.

The development roadmap includes several key upcoming milestones:

  • September 2025: BEML is expected to complete a prototype bullet train.
  • December 2026: The commencement of official trials.
