Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: 14 Power Substations Underway

The Ministry of Railways has announced the ongoing development of a vital network of 14 traction substations along the 508 km Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. These substations are designed to serve as the core of an advanced traction power supply system, providing the necessary energy to support India’s inaugural high-speed rail network.

High-Speed Powering with 2x25 kV Technology

To facilitate train operations at impressive speeds of up to 320 km/h, the project is implementing an advanced 2×25 kV Overhead Traction System. This sophisticated technology is being deployed in India for the first time, ensuring the high-capacity power delivery required for rapid transit.

Strategic Distribution Across Maharashtra and Gujarat

The 14 substations are distributed geographically across the corridor to ensure consistent power coverage. The breakdown is as follows:

  • Maharashtra (5 locations): Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, and Thane Depot.
  • Gujarat (9 locations): Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Mahemdabad, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati Depot.

Ensuring Reliability and Earthquake Safety

To maintain high operational reliability, the power network incorporates 31 Switching Posts, which allow for rapid fault isolation. Additionally, 16 Distribution Substations are being established to provide electricity for stations, signaling systems, and various maintenance facilities.

Safety remains a top priority for the Ministry. Each of the 14 traction substations is equipped with Early Earthquake Detection Seismometers. A total of 28 such units are being installed across the network to monitor seismic activity; these systems are capable of triggering an automatic train stoppage within seconds if an earthquake is detected.

Project Status and Completion Timeline

According to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the project has currently reached 62.16% physical progress. The initial section running from Surat to Vapi is slated to launch in August 2027, while the entire 508 km corridor is scheduled for full completion by December 2029.
