Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: Massive Milestone in Vadodara

The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has achieved a monumental engineering milestone in the construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. As of Monday, October 12, 2026, all 14 portal beams have been successfully completed over the critical Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani main line in Vadodara.
Navigating Complex Railway Infrastructure
This achievement marks a decisive step in constructing the high-speed rail viaduct through a highly complex 8.3-kilometer stretch. The construction area is particularly challenging as it intersects five different Indian Railways lines, including two primary main lines, requiring extreme precision to ensure no disruption to existing train services.
The Scale of the Engineering Feat
The portal beams used in this section are massive structures designed to support the immense weight and speed of the future bullet train. To manage the constraints of working over active railway infrastructure, engineers utilized the cast-in-situ construction method.
- Weight: Each of the 14 portal beams weighs approximately 1,500 tonnes.
- Dimensions: Each beam measures 37 meters in length, 4 meters in width, and 4 meters in height.
- Materials: Every unit required 590 cubic meters of concrete and a 55-tonne reinforcement cage.
Strategic Placement and Next Steps
The placement of these 14 beams is strategically distributed to facilitate the viaduct's expansion:
- 10 beams are positioned between the Vadodara Bullet Train station and the Vishwamitri Railway station, heading towards Surat.
- 4 beams are located between the Vadodara Railway station and the Chhayapuri Railway station, heading towards Ahmedabad.
With these massive structures now in place, the NHSRCL is preparing to launch 40-meter-long composite girders to continue extending the elevated viaduct.
Rapid Progress Toward Completion
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is moving at a rapid pace. Major structural progress and land acquisition in the Gujarat section have already surpassed the 80% completion mark. This progress is being achieved through close coordination with the Ministry of Railways.
For passengers looking forward to the high-speed era, the inaugural operational segment of the corridor, which will connect Surat to Bilimora, is currently scheduled to begin operations in August 2027.
