Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper: A 6-Hour Faster Journey!

Indian Railways is set to revolutionize overnight travel between Maharashtra and Karnataka with the introduction of the nation's second Mumbai Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper service. This premium train will connect Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai to the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru, offering a high-speed, luxury alternative for long-distance commuters.

Slash Travel Time by 6 Hours

The new service is designed to drastically reduce the time spent on the rails. While existing overnight options like the Udyan Express currently take about 22 hours to complete the journey, the Mumbai Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper aims to finish the trip in just 16 hours. This significant 6-hour time saving will make the overnight route much more attractive to business and leisure travelers alike.

The train is expected to operate six days a week with the following proposed schedule:

  • Departure: Approximately 8:00 PM from both Mumbai and Bengaluru.
  • Arrival: Approximately 11:55 AM the following day at the respective destinations.

Luxury Accommodations and Estimated Fares

The 16-coach train will provide a range of premium overnight options to suit different budgets. While the official fare structure is still under review, preliminary estimates for the one-way journey, including catering, are as follows:

  • AC First Class: Approximately ₹4,250
  • AC 2-tier: Approximately ₹3,000
  • AC 3-tier: Approximately ₹2,300

Proposed Intermediate Stops

To maximize connectivity, several intermediate stops are being considered for the route. Potential stations include:

  • Anantapur
  • Guntakal
  • Raichur
  • Kalaburagi
  • Solapur
  • Kalyan

Note: The route via Kalaburagi is under special consideration to leverage its track geometry, which could allow the train to maintain higher operational speeds.

Launch Timeline and Future Expansion

The service is scheduled to commence on November 1, 2026, coinciding with the Karnataka Rajyotsava festival. The inauguration ceremony is expected to be a major event, likely presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

This launch follows the successful deployment of the first Vande Bharat Sleeper on the Guwahati-Howrah route. It is part of a massive strategic plan by Indian Railways to introduce over 200 sleeper trainsets across the country. Currently, manufacturing is underway at BEML and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), with the first 10 sets in production.

Looking even further ahead, the ICF is developing a 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper design specifically for even longer-distance travel. This future model will feature enhanced amenities, including dedicated pantry cars and additional restrooms, with a target launch date of June 2027.
