Mumbai Central Railway Disruptions: 80 Trains Cancelled, 3 Dead
Massive disruptions on Mumbai's Central Railway due to fire and OHE failure led to 80 cancellations and three tragic fatalities on the tracks.

Monday, October 26, 2026, saw unprecedented chaos across Mumbai's suburban network. A combination of a signaling room fire and equipment failure triggered massive Mumbai Central Railway disruptions, resulting in the cancellation of 80 trains and the tragic loss of three lives.
Double Blow: Signaling Fire and OHE Failure
The crisis began early in the morning with two simultaneous technical failures. At approximately 9:23 AM, an overhead equipment (OHE) fault occurred between Mulund and Thane when an external wire fell onto electric cables, causing an insulator to burst.
Shortly after, at around 9:30 AM, a fire broke out at the Kanjurmarg signaling room. This blaze severely impacted 24 signals across six different lines, paralyzing much of the suburban movement.
Massive Service Disruptions and Delays
The impact on commuters was immediate and severe. A total of 80 suburban train services were cancelled, including:
- 60 services on the Main Line
- 20 services on the Harbour Line
Many passengers faced delays of 60 to 90 minutes, while some were reportedly stranded for as long as five to ten hours as they struggled to reach their destinations.
Tragedy on the Tracks
As the rail network collapsed, thousands of commuters attempted to walk along the tracks to bypass the delays. This desperate move led to three fatalities.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) confirmed that 21-year-old Sahil Thite was struck by an AC local train at Bhandup station at 5:39 PM while attempting to cross the tracks. Additionally, two other bodies were discovered between Ghatkopar and Vikhroli; authorities are currently working to identify these victims.
Restoration and Investigation
Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Swapnil Nila stated that repair work was carried out on a war footing. The Mulund-Thane section was restored by 10:48 AM, and the Kanjurmarg lines were brought back online sequentially throughout the afternoon:
- Down fast line: 4:10 PM
- Up fast line: 4:46 PM
- Down slow line: 5:30 PM
- Up slow line: 6:18 PM
A high-level committee has been tasked with investigating the cause of the Kanjurmarg fire. Meanwhile, CPRO Nila has issued an urgent appeal for passengers to refrain from walking on railway tracks even as services resume.
