Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A have achieved a major milestone by officially receiving mandatory safety clearance for their rolling stock, bringing the much-awaited urban transit project closer to commercial operations. Commuters can look forward to the launch of passenger services on an initial 10.5-kilometer stretch later this year. This upcoming route will connect Gaimukh to Cadbury Junction and encompasses ten distinct stations including Gaimukh, Govaniwada, Kasarvadavali, Vijay Garden, Dongripada, Tikuji-ni-wadi, Manpada, Kapurbawdi, Majiwada, and Cadbury Junction. While the rolling stock clearance was issued on August 28, 2026, authorities and operators are diligently working through final operational requirements to ensure a seamless and secure travel experience for the public.
The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety issued the mandatory safety clearance for the rolling stock on
August 28, 2026, marking a significant step forward for the development project. The primary bodies responsible for executing this transit network are the
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and the
Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited. Despite this recent approval, the operators still require several other mandatory safety certifications before opening the gates to passengers. Additionally, the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety conducted an inspection of the
Gaimukh pit line on August 22, 2026, and stakeholders are currently awaiting the official release of that inspection report.
This corridor faces a unique logistical challenge and may become the
first Mumbai Metro line to start operations without a dedicated car depot. Until the future
Mogharpada depot is fully finished, the
Gaimukh Metro Station will temporarily function as an interim facility to stable and maintain the trains, supported by a newly ready maintenance pit. To bridge supply chain gaps since the trains specifically manufactured for Metro 4 and 4A have not arrived yet, management plans to deploy
six rakes from the Charkop depot temporarily. These trains currently serve Metro Lines 2A, 7, and 9. In February 2025,
Larsen and Toubro alongside Alstom secured the contract to provide
39 driverless six-car trainsets for the entire network. The comprehensive project spans
35.2 kilometers, with Metro 4 covering
32.32 kilometers and Metro 4A adding
2.88 kilometers between Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh. Trial runs for this ambitious corridor officially began in
September 2025.
