Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation starts rail expansion for Third Mumbai

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation has officially commenced work on a major expansion plan to integrate the Third Mumbai region into the suburban railway network. This strategic development aims to support the government vision of expanding the Mumbai Metropolitan Region economy to 1.5 trillion dollars by the year 2047. Regular commuters and railway enthusiasts can now look forward to improved connectivity as the project gathers momentum with active land acquisition and technological upgrades.

As of September 6, 2026, land acquisition efforts for this expansion have accelerated, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority having secured physical possession of 550 acres of land. The Third Mumbai initiative, officially designated as the Karnala-Sai-Chirner New Town, follows a state government resolution passed on March 16, 2026, with the formal land acquisition process beginning on April 27, 2026. Landowners are being offered attractive compensation models including monetary payment, land pooling providing 22.5 percent of developed land, or the utilization of Floor Space Index and Transferable Development Rights.

To manage the anticipated increase in passenger traffic and service frequency, Indian Railways is implementing the advanced Kavach 5.0 Automatic Train Protection system across the Greater Mumbai suburban network. This next-generation signaling technology, formally announced in April 2025, is designed to reduce the safe distance between trains and potentially increase daily suburban services from the current 3,254 to approximately 4,000. According to official reports, this infrastructure upgrade is part of a broader commitment to raise the total number of local train services in the city to 3,500 by the year 2030.

Future Planning and Long Term Vision

MRVC is currently conducting a comprehensive study to assess travel demand and identify necessary rail corridors, capacity enhancements, and safety interventions required through 2047. This multi-crore investment highlights the unwavering commitment of Indian Railways to modernize suburban transit infrastructure, ensuring that passengers experience safer, faster, and more reliable daily commutes as the metropolitan area continues to grow exponentially.
