Muzaffarpur Junction transforms with new high-tech terminal and operational skywalk
Muzaffarpur Junction is undergoing a massive transformation as part of the Indian Railways’ ambitious ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’. The station has reached a significant milestone with the completion of its high-tech Combined Terminal Building (CTB) and the opening of a new skywalk. This redevelopment project, valued at an estimated Rs 450 crore, aims to provide passengers with airport-like facilities and world-class infrastructure.

Modernizing Passenger Infrastructure
With the completion of the three-story CTB, administrative operations have been streamlined. The new RPF post on the second floor is now equipped with advanced security surveillance systems to ensure passenger safety. While the skywalk is currently being used by railway staff, it will be opened to the general public once essential barricading and security protocols are fully established. Furthermore, the station’s ticketing services, including the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) and Passenger Reservation System (PRS), will soon be relocated to the new terminal. Once these shifts are finalized, Platform 1 is scheduled for demolition and reconstruction with a modern, updated design.
Digital Upgrades and Future Outlook
Senior railway officials, including RailTel CMD Sanjay Kumar and Samastipur DRM Jyoti Prakash Mishra, recently inspected the site to oversee the integration of digital and telecommunication systems. The modernization drive focuses on implementing the ’Kavach’ Automatic Train Protection System, expanding high-speed optical fiber networks, and installing IP-based CCTV cameras. To improve the passenger experience, the station will also see enhanced Wi-Fi and RailWire services, alongside the addition of executive lounges.
As the project remains under close monitoring by the Railway Ministry, the final design promises a sustainable future for the junction, integrating solar power and rainwater harvesting systems. Once completed, Muzaffarpur Junction is set to serve as a vital, modern transportation hub for the region.
