Nagda under construction railway bridge opens for traffic amid safety concerns

Traffic movement has officially commenced on an under-construction bridge in Nagda even though essential asphalting work remains incomplete. Reports highlight significant apprehensions regarding the structural quality of the project along with the alarming theft of safety barricades from the site. This recent development unfolds against a backdrop of wider regional unrest and growing public agitation regarding major railway infrastructure projects in the area. Between August 25 and August 26 2026 local farmers and business owners staged strong protests against ongoing surveys for proposed third and fourth railway lines. Represented by the Nagda Janhit Samiti these protesters submitted a formal memorandum to the Collector warning that the current alignment threatens the livelihoods and residences of approximately 3000 people including local landholders shopkeepers and petrol pump operators. The affected delegation also sought direct assistance from Ujjain MP Anil Firojiya to advocate for a safer alternative route that minimizes local disruption.

Ongoing Opposition to Nagda Bypass and Multi Tracking Projects

These safety and displacement concerns closely follow ongoing local opposition throughout July and August 2026 regarding a separate 13.5-kilometer railway bypass project at Nagda Junction. Valued at over Rs 390 crore this bypass is designed to direct heavy freight traffic away from the main Nagda station to optimize transit times for trains traveling between Ujjain Indore and Kota. Additionally a broader multi-tracking initiative for the 41-kilometer Ratlam-Nagda section is currently planned at an estimated cost exceeding Rs 1000 crore. Concerned citizens have already submitted formal complaints to the Divisional Railway Manager of the Ratlam division and the Governor citing the high potential for the alignment to displace residents and severely impact densely populated urban areas.
