The Arrival of the 'NaMo Green Rail'
Branded as the 'NaMo Green Rail,' this pioneering service was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, 2026. The train operates on an 89-kilometer stretch connecting Jind and Sonipat, serving as a critical pilot project in India's mission to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.
Cutting-Edge Green Technology
Manufactured indigenously by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, the train is designed to protect the environment by emitting only water vapor. Key features of this technological milestone include:
- Capacity: Designed to carry approximately 2,600 passengers.
- Speed: Currently capable of reaching speeds of up to 75 km/h.
- Eco-Friendly: Produces zero carbon emissions during operation.
Operational Challenges and Low Ridership
Despite its advanced technology, the service is currently facing significant operational hurdles. While the train has the capacity to hold 2,600 passengers, current daily ridership on the Jind-Sonipat line is only between 40 and 80 passengers. Due to this low demand, the service has been scaled back from the originally planned two round trips to just a single daily round trip.
