North Central Railway Engineers Develop High Capacity Waste Disposal System for LHB Coaches

Engineers at the North Central Railway Wagon Repair Workshop in Jhansi have successfully developed a prototype of a high-capacity waste disposal system for Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches to significantly improve onboard cleanliness. This new development expands waste storage capacity by 20 times, increasing it from the standard 15 to 20 liters up to 367.4 liters. Railway officials state that the system features a floor-mounted drop box funneling waste directly into an undergear stainless steel tank, which effectively prevents cabin odor and garbage accumulation. The prototype has been submitted to the Research Design and Standards Organization for inspection and formal approval before fleet-wide implementation.

Officials including Shivam Sharma noted this technological advancement will dramatically boost waste management capabilities. Sanjay Kumar Gautam, Public Relations Officer for the Agra Rail Division, emphasized that the design addresses long-standing challenges associated with limited dustbin capacities.

Broader Push for Cleanliness Across Indian Railways

This development aligns with a broader push by Indian Railways to enhance sanitation. In July 2026, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha that dedicated Environment and Housekeeping Management departments have been established at divisional, zonal, and Railway Board levels to ensure scientific solid waste management.

Recent regulatory updates have also tightened enforcement regarding passenger littering. Effective August 28, 2026, the penalty for littering on railway premises or inside trains was increased to ₹1,000. Furthermore, failure to pay the fine may result in court proceedings and an additional fine of up to ₹2,000 under the amended 2012 cleanliness rules.
