The North Eastern Railway has officially commissioned the indigenous 'Kavach' automatic train protection system on the 101.97-kilometer Domingarh-Swami Narayan Chhapiya rail section, effective August 31, 2026. This deployment marks the first standard 'Kavach'-equipped section for the zone, representing a significant milestone in modern rail safety infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Railways, the government has sanctioned 787.21 crore rupees to accelerate the implementation of this life-saving technology across the broader rail network.

North Eastern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Sumit Kumar stated that the project is being executed on a priority basis to ensure secure and seamless train operations for daily commuters. Developed indigenously by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), the system is engineered to prevent head-on and rear-end collisions, prohibit signal passing at danger, and automatically engage brakes if two trains occupy the same track. This offers critical protection, especially during dense fog conditions commonly experienced during winter.

Rigorous Trials and Future Rollout Plans

Technical oversight for the project's successful trials was provided by Chief Telecommunication Engineer (Project) Nilabh Mahesh and Deputy Chief Signal and Telecommunication Engineer (Project) Krishna Gopal Shankhdhar. Prior to the full commissioning, successful trials were conducted on the Domingarh-Jagatbela section on August 26, 2026. These tests involved simulating head-on and rear-end collision scenarios using two 'Kavach'-equipped engines to verify automated braking and SOS generation capabilities. Following these tests, the route spanning over 110 kilometers from Domingarh to Swami Narayan Chhapiya was officially designated as a 'Kavach' corridor.

The railway administration is currently working tirelessly to implement the system across 551 route kilometers of major rail paths in the first phase. Furthermore, Indian Railways has approved an additional 295 crore rupees for the installation of advanced 'Kavach' version 4.0 across 660 route kilometers within the Izzatnagar division of the North Eastern Railway, ensuring a safer and more reliable travel experience for millions of passengers.
