North Eastern Railway completes successful speed trial on Gorakhpur Cantt Unaula rail section

The North Eastern Railway has successfully completed a safety inspection and high-speed trial on the 7.64-kilometer doubled and electrified rail section between Gorakhpur Cantt and Unaula. Passengers and rail enthusiasts will find this infrastructure upgrade beneficial for smoother train operations in the region. Key details of the project include a successful speed trial conducted on September 3, 2026, official operational approval granted on September 4, 2026, a maximum test speed of 120 km/h, and an authorized operational speed of 90 km/h.
Rigorous Safety Inspections and Infrastructure Upgrades
The comprehensive assessment was led by Commissioner of Railway Safety for the North Eastern Circle, E. Srinivas. During the trial, a special train reached a maximum speed of 120 km/h on the newly commissioned double line. Following the successful performance, the CRS authorized train operations on the section with a maximum permissible speed of 90 km/h.
The rigorous inspection process evaluated critical safety infrastructure, including signaling systems, bridges, level crossings, overhead electrification, yard remodeling, and relay rooms. Officials also reviewed VDU panels, platform dimensions, and the safety proficiency of gatekeepers to ensure absolute passenger safety.
Timeline and Project Management
This important project was managed by the Varanasi Division. It followed pre-non-interlocking work that began on August 31, 2026, and subsequent non-interlocking work conducted on September 2 and 3. Operations on the route experienced temporary adjustments between August 30 and September 4 to facilitate these necessary infrastructure upgrades.
Key officials present during the inspection included Chief Administrative Officer Construction Anuj Mittal, Varanasi Divisional Railway Manager Ashish Jain, and Lucknow Divisional Railway Manager Gaurav Agarwal. The completion of this segment marks a significant advancement in the broader Gorakhpur Cantt–Paniyawa rail doubling initiative, which aims to enhance modernization and facilitate smoother rail traffic for daily commuters.
