Neura-Jatdumri Rail Line: Freight Starts to Fix Patna Delays

Freight operations have officially kicked off on the new 20-kilometer Neura-Jatdumri rail line, marking a major milestone in easing the massive congestion on the Delhi-Howrah corridor. The move is set to provide much-needed breathing room for one of India's busiest rail routes.
Bypassing the Danapur-Patna Bottleneck
The commencement of freight services on October 16, 2026, follows a successful high-speed trial. On October 8, 2026, the line underwent a trial run at 120 km/h, which earned the necessary approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS).
This new 20 km stretch is designed to strategically divert goods traffic away from the heavily congested Danapur-Patna-Kiul-Jhajha main line. For years, this section has been a primary source of delays, with freight trains often clogging the tracks and forcing passenger services to wait.
Relief for Premium Passenger Services
The rerouting of freight is expected to be a game-changer for passenger punctuality. Previously, trains frequently faced delays of four to six hours daily due to line clearance issues near Patna Junction. With the Neura-Jatdumri rail line now operational for freight, premium services are expected to see improved travel speeds and much better timing. This includes:
- Sampoorna Kranti Express
- Vikramshila Express
- Various Humsafar services
Expanding the Rail Network
Sarawati Chandra, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of East Central Railway, noted that this 20 km section is a critical component of the broader 42 km Neura-Daniyawan project. This project ultimately forms part of a massive 123.2 km rail link extending to Sheikhpura.
To support this growing network, several new stations and halts have been constructed, including:
- Gonpura
- Adhpa
- Chamachak
- Wajidpur
Looking ahead, the Danapur Rail Division is preparing to take the next step. Plans are underway to submit a proposal to the East Central Railway headquarters and the Railway Board to introduce passenger and express train operations on this new route, which would further optimize traffic flow on the vital Delhi-Patna corridor.
