New Delhi Railway Station redevelopment: Airport like facilities and 5 km elevated road to transform travel

The New Delhi Railway Station is undergoing a massive transformation to become a world-class multi-modal transport hub. Approved by the Union Cabinet, this project aims to provide passengers with airport-like facilities, including a grand air concourse and an extensive elevated road network. The redevelopment is being executed by the Rail Land Development Authority to handle up to seven lakh passengers daily, nearly doubling its current capacity.

What are the major facilities planned for the station

A grand air concourse will be built above the platforms to allow passengers to move between different tracks without any hassle. To solve the traffic problem, a 5 km long elevated road is being constructed for smooth entry and exit. The station will also have dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones, similar to what we see at major airports. For security, the Railway Minister announced the installation of 1,500 AI-powered cameras that will provide live alerts for any emergencies or security situations.

Construction progress and key project data

Construction work started in early 2023 and is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026. While the Ajmeri Gate side has already seen significant upgrades in waiting areas, work has now commenced on the Paharganj side. The project involves a joint venture between HG Infra Engineering and DEC Infrastructure with a total revised cost of Rs 2,469 crore.
