New Delhi Railway Station: Demolition starts at Pahar Ganj for ₹4700 crore redevelopment project

The redevelopment of the New Delhi Railway Station is moving at a fast pace under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Demolition of several buildings on the Pahar Ganj side and Platform 1 area has started to clear space for the new structure. The Rail Land Development Authority is managing this mega project with an estimated budget of 4700 crore rupees to transform the station into a global transport hub.

The project focuses on providing world-class amenities similar to modern airports. Two grand station buildings will be constructed on both the Pahar Ganj and Ajmeri Gate sides. The station will eventually handle 7 lakh passengers daily, which is significantly higher than its current capacity. Key infrastructure highlights include:

  • Multi-modal Hub: Integration with Delhi Metro and Bharat Taxi services for easy transit.
  • AI Security: Installation of 1500 AI-powered cameras for real-time safety monitoring and alerts.
  • Road Network: Construction of 7 flyovers and elevated roads to reduce congestion around the station.
  • Parking: A new multi-level parking facility will accommodate up to 1500 vehicles.

Phased construction and project timeline

The redevelopment is planned to be completed within 45 months, with an expected finish date in 2029. To ensure smooth operations, the work is divided into five phases. During each phase, approximately 20 percent of trains will be shifted to other stations like Anand Vihar, Nizamuddin, and Sarai Rohilla. Major trains like Rajdhani and Vande Bharat will continue to operate from the main station as a priority.
