A new terminal station, named New Bhagalpur, is set to be constructed near Chaudharidih, approximately 4 kilometers from Bhagalpur Junction. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been submitted to the Ministry, and upon approval, the tendering process will commence, paving the way for construction to begin.
The new terminal will host long-distance trains like the Vikramshila Express, LTT Express, Anga Express, and others that currently operate from Bhagalpur Junction. This shift will significantly reduce congestion at Bhagalpur Junction and ease traffic bottlenecks at Station Chowk. Designed with state-of-the-art amenities, the New Bhagalpur terminal will enhance passenger experience while improving railway efficiency.
Key Features of New Bhagalpur Terminal
- Four Platforms: Each platform will be capable of accommodating trains with up to 24 LHB coaches, providing ample space for increased passenger capacity.
- Modern Amenities: The terminal will include lifts, escalators, underground parking, and a spacious concourse area. Additionally, the station building will be constructed above the parking area, making efficient use of space.
- Maintenance Facilities: The new terminal will have washing aprons and stabling lines, ensuring seamless maintenance operations for trains.
- Project Cost: The entire project is estimated to cost ₹200 crore, with additional land being sought in Jagdishpur to expand the train yard.
The New Bhagalpur terminal will also handle train operations from Dumka, connected via the Mandarhill section through a bypass from Sabour. Following the establishment of New Bhagalpur, Bhagalpur Junction will be upgraded to a world-class facility, modeled similarly to modern airports.
Bhagalpur Junction Transformation
Following the terminal’s completion, Bhagalpur Junction will undergo a significant transformation with an estimated budget of ₹450 crore. Plans include:
- Enhanced Passenger Facilities: The station will be equipped with spacious platforms, concourse areas, lifts on every platform, and aesthetically pleasing spaces designed for passenger comfort.
- Modern Infrastructure: The addition of large screens, an advanced announcement system, and separate entry/exit routes will streamline passenger movement.
- Improved Train Operations: Trains bound for Kolkata, Varanasi, and Patna will be designated to depart from various points, enhancing regional rail service options.
According to Shiv Prasad Kumar, ADRM Malda, the New Bhagalpur terminal will manage originating trains, offering travelers two station options for convenience. Upon approval, construction of the New Bhagalpur terminal will commence, followed by modernization efforts at Bhagalpur Junction to better serve the growing demands of the city’s passengers.
