Indian Railways is set to make a significant advancement in sustainable transportation with the introduction of hydrogen-fueled trains. The organization has approved a pilot project to retrofit existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains with hydrogen fuel cells. A prototype of the first hydrogen-powered train is scheduled for trial runs in December, specifically in the Jind-Sonipat section of Haryana.

Selected Routes for Hydrogen Trains

Railway officials have identified several heritage routes for the deployment of hydrogen trains, which include the Matheran Hill Railway, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Kalka-Shimla Railway, Kangra Valley, and Nilgiri Mountain Railway. If the trials prove successful, these hydrogen trains are expected to commence operations on these picturesque routes within the next three years, thereby enhancing the experience of traveling through India’s cultural and natural heritage.

Global Context and Financial Aspects

Currently, hydrogen-fueled trains are operational in only four countries: Germany, France, Sweden, and China, making India the fifth nation to adopt this technology. The introduction of these trains is also aligned with India’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions. A senior railway official indicated that the prototype is being developed at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, with plans to roll out 35 hydrogen trains under the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ initiative. The estimated cost for each train is Rs 80 crore, with an additional Rs 70 crore allocated for necessary infrastructure development.
