Indian Railways has announced a massive plan to handle the rush during summer vacations. The railway board will operate over 18,000 special trips to ensure passengers get confirmed seats. This move aims to solve the long-standing problem of waiting lists for travelers during the holiday season.
What are the details of these Summer Special trains
The Indian Railways approved 908 summer special trains that will make 18,262 trips between April 15 and July 15, 2026. Out of these, notifications for 660 trains covering 11,294 trips are already out. The remaining schedules will be released soon to manage the crowd at stations.
Which routes will get the most benefit
The railway has increased trains on busy routes to help common passengers. Key routes include:
| Major Routes | Destination/Connectivity |
|---|---|
| High Demand | Delhi-Patna, Mumbai-Varanasi, Bengaluru-Chennai, Delhi-Katra |
| Tourist Spots | Shimla, Nainital and South Indian hill stations |
| State Connect | Mumbai, Gujarat, and Kolkata to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar |
How is technology being used to stop waiting lists
Railway Board is using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analysis to track passenger demand. If the waiting list increases on any route, AI helps the board to immediately schedule a summer special train or add extra coaches to regular trains. CPRO Sumit Kumar of North Eastern Railway stated that this will make travel much easier for people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
