Kanpur Elevated Railway Track: PWD hands over 90% land to Railways, construction to start soon

The Mandana-Anwarganj elevated railway track project in Kanpur has reached a major milestone. The Public Works Department (PWD) has handed over 90% of the required land to the Indian Railways. This project aims to remove traffic congestion at 18 railway crossings on GT Road, benefiting over 20 lakh people.

What is the current status of land acquisition?

Out of the total 22,306 square meters of land required, PWD has already transferred 90% to the railway authorities. PWD Executive Engineer Anup Mishra stated that the remaining 10% of land, including some areas near IIT Kanpur and Mandana, will be handed over by May 15. The total budget for land acquisition was reduced to approximately ₹20 crore as most of the land was already under government records.

Project details and key highlights

The project involves building a 15.51 km elevated track with an estimated cost of ₹1115 crore. The Ministry of Railways has already finalized the tender and assigned a private company for construction. A new railway station named after Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be built in front of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University, while Rawatpur and Kalyanpur stations will be closed.

When will the construction begin?

With the tender finalized and land acquisition nearly complete, construction is expected to start by the end of May. North Eastern Railway SSE Abhishek confirmed that there are no longer any hurdles to begin the work. The government has already sent a letter to the Prime Minister for the foundation stone laying ceremony.
