New Delhi Railway Station has started a new system to manage the heavy rush of passengers. Following a decision by Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnav in March 2026, the station now uses turnstile gates to ensure only people with valid tickets enter the platforms. This pilot project began on April 23-24, 2026, to make travel safer and more organized.
How does the new entry system work?
The system is currently being tested at Gate Number 9 near Ajmeri Gate. It uses turnstile gates similar to those found in Metro stations. Separate entry points have been created for passengers with reserved and unreserved tickets. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and commercial staff are stationed at these gates to check tickets and manage queues.
What are the key features of this project?
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Current Location | Gate No. 9, Ajmeri Gate (Pilot Project) |
| Waiting Area | Holding area for 7,000+ passengers near Ajmeri Gate |
| Security Update | 1,500 AI-based CCTV cameras to be installed |
| Future Tech | QR code-based entry system planned |
| Responsible Unit | Northern Railway (Delhi Division) |
Why was this change implemented?
This move comes after a stampede occurred at the station in February 2025. To prevent such incidents, the railway is focusing on better crowd management. Chief Public Relations Officer Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay stated that if this pilot project succeeds, the same system will be rolled out at other major railway stations across the country.
