Indian Railways has started testing metro-style turnstile gates at New Delhi Railway Station to improve security and manage the heavy rush of passengers. This new system is currently being trialed at Gate Number 9 near Ajmeri Gate. If the pilot project proves successful, the railway department will install these automatic gates at other major stations across India.
How will the turnstile gate system work?
These automatic gates allow only one person to pass at a time, which prevents unauthorized entry and manages the flow of people. RPF personnel and railway staff will be stationed at the gates to check tickets and maintain queues. The system creates a clear separation between passengers holding reserved and unreserved tickets to reduce chaos and long lines at the entrance.
What are the key features of the new system?
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| System Name | Turnstile Gate / Digital Access Gate |
| Trial Location | Gate No. 9, Ajmeri Gate side |
| Primary Goal | Crowd control and security boost |

What did the railway officials say?
Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, stated that an access control system is being implemented to streamline passenger movement. Similarly, Pushpesh R Tripathi, DRM of Delhi Division, confirmed that these gates facilitate movement in one direction and noted that it will take some time for the system to be fully operational across the station.
