Indian Railways and various local organizations have started initiatives to provide free drinking water to passengers during the summer heat. While some efforts are part of official railway directives, other services are being run by local sponsors to ensure no traveler remains thirsty at the stations.

Which stations are providing free chilled water?

The Nagpur Division of Central Railway has introduced free chilled water distribution at several stations including Sevagram, Dhamangaon, Wani, Pandhurna, and Multai. This move was made to help passengers, especially those traveling in general and unreserved coaches, during the intense heatwaves in the Vidarbha region.

What are the general summer guidelines for water supply?

The Ministry of Railways has instructed all Zonal Railways to ensure that all existing water coolers are fully functional. To manage the summer rush, the ministry is taking the following steps:

  • Deploying water tankers at critical railway stations.
  • Conducting regular inspections of water quality and availability.
  • Collaborating with NGOs, Mahila Samitis, and Scouts and Guides for distribution.
  • Working with Municipal Corporations to solve water scarcity in specific areas.

What are the latest updates on Rail Neer bottles?

Indian Railways has updated the water policy for premium trains to reduce wastage. Passengers on Vande Bharat trains now receive 500 ml bottles of Rail Neer instead of one-liter bottles. If a passenger needs more, a second 500 ml bottle is provided on demand without any extra charge. This system was previously started for Shatabdi trains in 2019.
