Overview of Vande Bharat Train

The Vande Bharat train represents a significant advancement in India’s rail transport, offering a clean, fully air-conditioned environment with comfortable seating and high-speed travel. Launched as a dream project by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the train aims to enhance the passenger experience on Indian Railways. However, despite the modern amenities, it appears that the expected passenger turnout is not being realized across various routes, leading to concerns about its viability.

Passenger Shortages on Various Routes

Recent reports indicate that several Vande Bharat routes, such as the Durg-Vishakhapatnam and Secunderabad-Nagpur routes, are experiencing significant passenger shortages. For instance, the Durg-Vishakhapatnam train has a capacity of 1,128 seats but is only accommodating between 150 to 200 passengers per trip. Similarly, on the Secunderabad-Nagpur route, the train operates with just 20% occupancy, with 80% of the seats remaining unfilled. The Meerut-Lucknow route, which initially showed promise, is now also struggling, with only 120 to 150 passengers utilizing the service regularly out of an eight-coach configuration.

Reasons for Low Passenger Turnout

The primary reason for the low passenger numbers on the Vande Bharat train is attributed to its higher fares compared to other trains operating on the same routes. While the train does provide faster travel times, many passengers are unwilling to pay the premium for marginal time savings. Interestingly, despite the availability of seats on certain routes, some Vande Bharat trains continue to run at full capacity on others, indicating a mixed response from travelers. To address the issue, the Railways is considering strategies such as extending routes and adjusting the number of coaches to attract more passengers.
