NFR Launches AI Cleaning in 5 Superfast Trains

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has taken a massive leap toward digital transformation by launching an advanced AI-based cleaning inspection and digital monitoring service. This high-tech initiative, rolled out across five superfast trains, aims to significantly enhance hygiene standards and passenger comfort during journeys.

Revolutionizing Onboard Maintenance

In a significant move, NFR has become the second zonal railway in India to adopt such a sophisticated, high-tech approach to onboard maintenance. This project is being implemented in collaboration with SMC Integrated Facility Management Solutions Limited.

The rollout of these smart services began in October 2026 with a phased implementation across key routes:

  • October 10: Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express.
  • October 11: Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express.
  • October 14: New Jalpaiguri–Patna Vande Bharat Express, New Jalpaiguri–Guwahati Vande Bharat Express, and the Kamakhya–SMVT Bengaluru Express.

AI-Driven Hygiene Monitoring

According to NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the system utilizes artificial intelligence to conduct rigorous assessments of coach hygiene. The AI technology focuses on several critical areas to ensure a clean environment, including:

  • Regular cleaning of coach interiors.
  • Maintenance and cleanliness of AC windows.
  • Washroom hygiene and upkeep.
  • Efficient and timely waste disposal.

To ensure complete accountability, the system incorporates geo-tagged service verification and real-time staff tracking, all managed through a centralized monitoring hub that allows authorities to oversee cleaning activities remotely.

Two-Hour Complaint Resolution Guarantee

One of the most significant benefits for passengers is the rapid response mechanism integrated into the digital system. The NFR has set a strict goal to resolve all hygiene-related complaints within a two-hour timeframe.

If the onboard team is unable to address an issue within this window, the system is designed to automatically escalate the matter to the relevant railway authorities for immediate intervention. This ensures that passenger concerns do not go unheard.

Furthermore, the digital system integrates real-time passenger feedback, allowing travelers to provide star ratings to evaluate the service. This data-driven approach allows the railway to continuously improve performance based on actual passenger experiences. To support these high standards, dedicated onboard teams have also been deployed to provide technical assistance and ensure consistent water availability throughout the journey.
