NFR AI Cleaning: 5 Superfast Trains Get High-Tech Hygiene Upgrade

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has officially rolled out an advanced, AI-driven cleaning and monitoring system across five of its premier superfast trains. This technological leap, effective from October 18, 2026, is designed to drastically improve hygiene standards and ensure much higher accountability in passenger services.
AI-Powered Monitoring and Digital Records
To ensure that cleanliness is not just a promise but a reality, the NFR has introduced a digital framework for its housekeeping staff. Under this new system, cleaning personnel are required to use a dedicated mobile application to document their work. They must upload geo-tagged and time-stamped photographs of the cleaned areas, creating a permanent and verifiable digital record of maintenance activities.
This high-tech oversight specifically focuses on maintaining the cleanliness of passenger coaches and the hygiene of onboard toilets, ensuring that sanitation standards remain consistent throughout the journey.
Five Superfast Trains Under the New System
The AI-based cleaning and monitoring initiative is currently being implemented on the following five routes:
- New Jalpaiguri-Patna Vande Bharat Express (22233/22234)
- New Jalpaiguri-Guwahati Vande Bharat Express (22227/22228)
- Guwahati-Kolkata Garib Rath Express (12518/12517)
- Dibrugarh-Mumbai LTT Express (15946/15945)
- Kamakhya-SMVT Bengaluru Express (12552/12551)
Rapid Grievance Redressal: The 2-Hour Rule
One of the most significant changes for passengers is the introduction of a strict two-hour resolution window for any reported grievances. If a passenger raises a concern regarding cleanliness or service, dedicated teams deployed on these specific routes are mandated to resolve the issue within 120 minutes.
NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma confirmed that these specialized teams have been strategically positioned on these routes to ensure both consistent sanitation and a rapid response to passenger needs.
A Step Toward Modernized Railways
With this rollout, Northeast Frontier Railway becomes the second zonal railway in India to implement such AI-based upgrades, following the precedent set by Northern Railway. This initiative aligns with the broader On-Board Housekeeping Service (OBHS) policy approved in February 2026, which integrated AI-based surveillance into railway service standards.
This digital transformation is part of a wider trend across Indian Railways, similar to the AI-powered 'Saarthi' portal launched by the Jaipur division of North Western Railway, which uses automated alerts to ensure station-based complaints are addressed promptly by senior officials.
