NFR GM Inspects Sairang Station Amid Rain Disruptions

Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, the General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), conducted a formal inspection of Sairang Railway Station near Aizawl, Mizoram, on October 1, 2026. The visit took place amidst significant operational challenges caused by severe weather conditions in the region.
Weather-Related Service Disruptions
Heavy rainfall and muck overflow have severely impacted the Bairabi-Sairang line, particularly in the section between Kawnpui and Mualkhang. These environmental factors have forced several changes to the train schedule:
- Sairang-Guwahati Express: Canceled on September 30, 2026.
- Sairang-Silchar Express: Canceled on October 1, 2026.
- Sairang-Kolkata Express: Diverted to originate from Hailakandi on October 1, 2026.
To mitigate the inconvenience to travelers, NFR has deployed 20 buses at Bairabi to transport affected passengers to either Sairang or Aizawl.
Focus on Safety and Infrastructure
During his inspection, Shrivastava assessed passenger amenities, operational safety, and the overall state of the infrastructure. He issued strict directives to railway officials to maintain high standards of cleanliness and ensure service reliability. This visit follows a previous inspection of the Bairabi-Sairang section on September 28, 2026, where the focus was on track maintenance and the progress of electrification.
An Engineering Achievement
The 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang line is a significant engineering milestone, completed at a cost exceeding ₹8,000 crore. The complex terrain required the construction of:
- 153 bridges
- 45 tunnels
Since its official inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, Sairang has quickly become a vital transport hub for the region. In its first year of operation, ending September 13,
