NHAI & Railways to Fix Itarsi X-Shaped Junction Bottleneck

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Indian Railways are joining forces to implement a major Itarsi infrastructure upgrade. This collaborative effort aims to resolve a significant traffic bottleneck at a unique X-shaped intersection located within the Bagdev forests in Madhya Pradesh.

The Bagdev Forest Intersection Challenge

The site is a critical junction where the Gwalior-Nagpur National Highway-46 meets the Delhi-Chennai main railway line. Because of its proximity to the Itarsi Junction—a massive transit hub that handles approximately 400 trains every day—the area experiences immense pressure from both road and rail traffic.

Current infrastructure at the site has been identified as a primary cause of congestion. The main issues include:

  • The narrow width of the existing railway culvert bridge.
  • The limitations of the current single-lane National Highway.

These constraints have led to frequent delays, impacting daily commuters, tourists, and devotees traveling to nearby religious sites in the region.

Collaborative Plan for Smoother Transit

To address these issues, the two central government agencies are working together at the request of local authorities. Local officials are actively providing support to ensure the project addresses the specific needs of the community and the transit network.

The proposed infrastructure upgrade plan is currently under consideration by the relevant agencies. The goal is to streamline the flow of both vehicles and trains, ensuring smoother connectivity and reducing the long-standing delays at this vital X-shaped confluence.
