The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project has reached a massive new milestone. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has successfully completed the construction of a 480-meter long bridge over the Sabarmati River, marking a significant step forward in India's high-speed rail journey.

A Massive Engineering Feat

Standing at a staggering 36 meters high—roughly equivalent to a 12-story building—this bridge is a testament to modern engineering. With this completion, NHSRCL has finished 18 out of the 21 planned river bridges required for the high-speed rail corridor in Gujarat.

Advanced Construction Techniques

To cross the riverbed efficiently, engineers utilized the specialized "Balanced Cantilever Method." This technique is highly advantageous as it allows for the construction of long spans without the need for traditional scaffolding beneath the deck, making it ideal for river crossings.

  • Span Design: The bridge features five 76-meter spans and two 50-meter spans.
  • Efficiency: This design significantly reduces the number of piers needed within the river compared to standard 40-meter span designs.
  • Precision: Each span consists of 23 segments that were cast on-site, requiring extreme precision and rigorous quality control at every phase.

Strategic Location and Design

The bridge is strategically located between the Sabarmati and Ahmedabad bullet train stations. It sits approximately one kilometer from the Sabarmati station and four kilometers from the Ahmedabad station.

Because the structure runs parallel to the Western Railway’s Ahmedabad-Delhi main line, engineers had to increase the pier heights to ensure sufficient vertical clearance for existing rail traffic. The structure is supported by eight massive circular piers, each measuring between 6 and 6.5 meters in diameter. These are positioned to minimize disruption to the river's natural waterway:

  • Four piers are located within the riverbed.
  • Two piers are on the banks.
  • Two piers are located outside the river banks.

This critical phase of the project was officially concluded on October 3, 2026.
