NHSRCL Finishes Massive Sabarmati River Bullet Train Bridge
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has achieved a monumental milestone in the construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. The massive bridge spanning the Sabarmati River is now complete, marking a significant leap forward for India's high-speed rail ambitions.
A Towering Engineering Marvel
The newly finished structure is a giant in terms of scale, stretching 480 meters in length and rising approximately 36 meters high. To put its sheer magnitude into perspective, the height of this bridge is comparable to a 12-story building.
Strategically positioned to facilitate rapid transit, the bridge sits between the Sabarmati and Ahmedabad bullet train stations. It is located just 1 km from the Sabarmati station and 4 km from the Ahmedabad station.
Precision Design for Complex Clearances
Engineering this bridge required navigating complex existing infrastructure. A primary challenge was ensuring sufficient vertical clearance over the Western Railway's Ahmedabad-Delhi main line, which is positioned 14.8 meters above ground level.
To support the immense weight and span, the structure relies on eight circular piers, each with a diameter ranging from 6 to 6.5 meters. To ensure minimal obstruction to the riverbed, engineers utilized a strategic placement method:
- Four piers are placed directly within the river.
- Two piers are located on the riverbanks.
- Two piers are positioned outside the banks.
Advanced 'Balanced Cantilever' Construction
The bridge features impressive long spans, ranging from 50 to 76 meters. Specifically, the design includes five 76-meter spans and two 50-meter spans. By utilizing these longer spans, engineers were able to reduce the total number of piers required compared to the standard 40-meter spans used elsewhere on the corridor.
Each span was meticulously constructed using the 'Balanced Cantilever Method', involving 23 segments cast on-site. This technical approach is highly favored for deep waterways because it emphasizes extreme precision and rigorous quality control during the construction process.
Project Progress Update
The completion of the Sabarmati River bridge is a major boost for the project timeline. With this structure now in place, NHSRCL has successfully finished 18 out of the 21 planned river bridges required for the corridor within the state of Gujarat.
