NHSRCL Finishes 14 Massive Portal Beams in Vadodara

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project has reached a major engineering milestone in Gujarat. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has successfully completed the construction of all 14 portal beams in the Vadodara section, a critical step in creating the elevated corridor for the upcoming bullet train.

Crossing the Busy Rail Network

These massive structures are designed to solve a significant logistical challenge: allowing the elevated high-speed corridor to pass safely over five existing Indian Railways tracks. This includes the high-traffic Delhi-Mumbai main line, which sees constant movement of passenger and freight trains.

Each portal beam is a heavy-duty engineering marvel, weighing approximately 1,500 tons. To ensure the corridor can withstand the demands of high-speed travel, the beams were built to precise specifications:

  • Length: 37 meters
  • Width: 4 meters
  • Height: 4 meters
  • Concrete Volume: Approximately 590 cubic meters per beam
  • Reinforcement: A massive 55-ton steel cage for every structure

Overcoming Space and Traffic Constraints

Constructing such heavy structures over active railway lines presented immense challenges. Due to the limited space available and the need to keep the existing rail infrastructure running, engineers utilized the cast-in-situ construction method. This approach allowed the beams to be built precisely where they were needed without disrupting the flow of trains below.

The entire operation required intense coordination with Indian Railways. To manage the construction safely over the busy network, officials had to implement controlled rail blocks, ensuring that work on the beams did not compromise the safety of existing train services.

Strategic Location of the Beams

The construction took place within an 8.3-kilometer stretch of the project. The 14 portal beams are strategically positioned as follows:

  • 10 beams: Located between the Vadodara bullet train station and the Vishwamitri railway station.
  • 4 beams: Located between the Vadodara railway station and the Chhayapuri railway station.

What Comes Next?

With the completion of these foundational portal beams, the project is ready to move into its next intensive phase. The NHSRCL will now begin the process of launching 40-meter-long composite girders, continuing the rapid progress of India's first high-speed rail corridor.
