Nilgiri Mountain Railway: New Lightweight Coaches Pass Trials!
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) has reached a significant milestone in its journey toward modernization and enhanced performance. On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, successful trial runs were conducted for newly redesigned coaches on the iconic route between Mettupalayam and Coonoor.
These trials mark a crucial step in upgrading the mountain railway's rolling stock, focusing on engineering solutions specifically tailored for the challenging terrain of the Nilgiri hills.
Lighter Weight for Steeper Ascents
One of the most significant improvements in these new coaches is their weight. To alleviate the heavy strain on locomotives during the steep mountain ascent, the coaches have undergone a major engineering overhaul. Each new coach is more than 1.5 tonnes lighter than the previous 15-tonne models.
Manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Perambur, Chennai, these steel-bodied coaches are designed to offer a superior experience for passengers. The upgrades include:
- Panoramic windows to provide travelers with unobstructed views of the mountain scenery.
- Modern LED lighting to enhance the interior environment.
Fleet Expansion and Configuration
The current project involves the production of 15 coaches in total. These will be organized into three complete rakes to streamline operations. Each rake is configured as follows:
- One first-class carriage.
- Two second-class seater cars.
- One luggage-cum-passenger car.
To ensure continuous service and maintenance flexibility, three additional spare units have also been produced.
Rigorous Safety and Technical Testing
Because the Nilgiri terrain is unforgiving, the testing process is incredibly strict. Officials from the Salem Division of Southern Railways and the Research Design and Standards Organisation (
