Northeast Frontier Railway completes transition to LHB coaches for all long distance trains
The Northeast Frontier Railway has achieved a major milestone by shifting all long distance passenger train services to modern Linke Hofmann Busch coaches. This upgradation brings better comfort and enhanced safety for daily commuters travelling across the region. Passengers can now experience a smoother journey as conventional ICF coaches have been completely replaced on every long distance route managed by this zone.
The Northeast Frontier Railway finished converting all long distance passenger train services to LHB coaches in August 2026. A total of 103 long distance passenger services now operate with LHB coaches across the network. This figure includes 55 services managed by the Northeast Frontier Railway and 48 services from other railway zones. The transition marks the successful completion of a phased modernization plan spanning the 2025 to 2026 financial year.
Advantages of Modern LHB Coaches
Modern LHB coaches bring multiple technical benefits compared to older designs. They feature advanced safety functions, higher speed potential, and reduced maintenance requirements. Passengers enjoy superior riding comfort due to sophisticated hydraulic shock absorbers and modern suspension systems. Furthermore, the structural design incorporates anti climbing and anti telescopic capabilities to significantly improve overall crashworthiness during emergencies.
Advanced Fire Safety Integration
Passenger safety remains a top priority with the newly modernized fleet. Extensive fire protection technologies have been installed across various coach types to prevent untoward incidents. A Fire and Smoke Detection System is installed in 1,226 AC coaches. A Fire Detection and Suppression System is fitted in 155 power cars and 79 pantry cars. Additionally, 3,436 AC coaches have integration with aerosol based fire detection systems that monitor critical areas continuously for rapid alarm responses.
